"The ideal metaphor for the new reality of U.S.-China relations: The U.S. Embassy has been straining, in vain, to get the Chinese government to change the official Chinese transliteration of Obama, from 奥巴马 to 欧巴马—basically, from Ao Ba Ma to Ou Ba Ma. As is often the case when China incorporates a foreign word into Chinese characters, the original Ao Ba Ma spelling popped up organically some years ago and stuck, even though it is not a correct translation. Now, as a great piece on Danwei.org explains, the U.S. is trying to persuade China to change it, but China, so far, says no way. The moral: When you can’t even get your counterpart in a negotiation to spell your name right, you are probably in for a rough ride."

Dressed in a corduroy skirt, 27-year-old Syracuse resident Michelle Deferio stood near the Waverly Avenue entrance of the Schine Student Center holding a sign.
“HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIN, CHRIST CAN SET YOU FREE,” it read.
Chris Pesto, a gay Syracuse University junior majoring in acting, was walking back from class around 3:30 p.m. He saw Deferio’s sign and decided to make one of his own.
“CORDUROY SKIRTS ARE A SIN,” his sign read.

I agree, I actually like this song. But I get more of an old-school Elvis Costello angry-young-man vibe than a Spoon vibe.

Vampire Weekend — Cousins

Wow, look! It’s the first Vampire Weekend song that doesn’t make me want KILL EVERYONE. Only thing is, it sounds like a Spoon cast-off. Which is probably why I can tolerate it. I mean, there are definitely worse things than being influenced by one of my favorite bands of all time, but it generally helps if you try and put your own spin on things, guys.

Stop What You’re Doing And Watch The Hell Out Of This of the Day: Some crafty 3ds MAX magician has put together this mind-intercoursing video illustrating what Earth might look like if it had rings similar to those currently being taken for granted by our noxious sibling Saturn.

I sincerely hope your place of employment doesn’t have a no-crying-at-desk policy, because you’re about to do some serious bawling.

Ok, I know what I want for my Birthday now.

"I don’t think we are a delicate country. And I don’t think we’re a fragile country….The people who continually tell me how much they love this country and I don’t also say how little this country can accomplish to overcome the problems that all countries face."

Jon Stewart, talking to Lou Dobbs. Part 2. Part 3:

Dobbs:

We have a country that is fragile. That it is being governed as if it had unlimited resources. That we had every reason, because we are a superpower, to squander wealth and lives and blood…

We have a responsibility not to push this country farther than it can bear…

It is a time in which we have a nation that is extraordinarily delicate, extraordinarily vulnerable. And it’s time to start rethinking some of the orthodoxies, whether one is a liberal, a conservative, a Republican, or a Democrat.

Stewart:

I don’t think we are a delicate country. And I don’t think we’re a fragile country. I think that we’re an incredibly tenacious. The whole fabric of this country was born of people who came from a place they didn’t want to be to a place they wanted to be, to do whatever they had to do to make that. And that ethos still lives in this country.

The idea that trying Khalid Sheik Mohammed in New York will destroy us, or trying to bring universal health care to people will destroy us, or trying to solve the problem of global warming will destroy us is trumped up fear that’s being used as a wedge to flatter people into voting for them. And it is absolutely not a part of our national character. The people who continually tell me how much they love this country and I don’t… also say how little this country can accomplish to overcome the problems that all countries face.

It might be worth remembering Jon Stewart saying this to Lou Dobbs’ face.
